Decopatch looks complicated until you try it. Then it looks obvious. The technique — tearing decorative paper into pieces, applying it to an object with a special glue-varnish, and layering until you have something that looks entirely intentional — is one of those crafts that rewards beginners immediately and keeps rewarding you the more you do it.
How It Works
The process has three components: the paper, the glue, and the object. You tear (never cut — torn edges blend better) the Decopatch paper into irregular pieces, brush the glue onto the object, lay the paper down, brush more glue over the top, and repeat. The glue acts as both adhesive and varnish, so each layer seals the one beneath it. When you're done, you finish with a dedicated varnish for durability and sheen.
That's it. No specialist skills required. No drying time between layers. No expensive equipment.
The Paper
Decopatch paper is where the brand really shines. The patterns are genuinely beautiful — designed in France, printed on thin tissue-weight paper that conforms to curved surfaces without wrinkling. A few favourites from the CzipLee range:
- Paper-Texture: Pink Flamingos — bold and graphic, works beautifully on animal objects
- Paper: Pink 717 Small Flower — delicate and versatile, suits almost any object
The Glue
Decopatch makes several glue formulations depending on the finish you want:
- Paperpatch Glossy Glue 180g — the standard, gives a clean glossy finish
- Paperpatch Sparkling Glue 150g — adds a subtle shimmer to the finished surface
- Aquapro Ultra-Glossy Varnish — the finishing coat for a lacquered, professional result
The Objects
Decopatch sells papier-mâché objects specifically designed to be decorated — animals, figures, and shapes that give you a ready-made form to work on. The CzipLee range includes:
- Small Dachshund — a perennial favourite, great for beginners
- Small Cat With Tail — compact and satisfying to complete in one session
- Large Llama — for when you want a statement piece

Decopatch works for adults who want a meditative craft that produces something genuinely beautiful, and for children who want to make something they're proud of. It's a strong workshop activity, a reliable rainy-day project, and one of the better gift options for anyone who likes making things.
