A History of Christianity in Malaysia, Revised & Updated

Groups of people in Malaysia have long made Christianity part of who they are. This book seeks to tell their story from the earliest churches to recent events. It is a story of streams of language, ethnicity, faith and culture, and courage. It is a story of what began at the edges becoming central—Christians in Malaysia know what it means for the stone that the builders rejected to become the chief cornerstone (Psalm 118:22).

Looking back, there are figures whose vision and decisions made a difference, but what seems to matter most in the long run are people whose lives often seemed incidental at the time. Today, Christianity in Malaysia is marked by a sense of belonging and a commitment to prayer which engages with the whole of life. John Roxborogh tells the story of how we have reached this point through the experiences of colonialism, war, independence and nation-building over more than 500 years.

This revised edition (2024) has an updated bibliography, a new guide to archives and sources of documentation. It will be a reference to help new generations fill gaps in memory and understanding of the story of Christian foundations in Malaysia, correct past interpretations, and be encouraged in the labours and joys of telling the story since.
