The Melaka Chetti Kitchen


‘The Melaka Chetti Kitchen’ is a defining publication that seeks to preserve the traditional food culture and knowledge of this unique Peranakan community. Some recipes have been passed down for more than 500 years, providing a glimpse of the community’s way of life and its assimilation with other communities within the same ecosystem.

With a detailed description of the food recipes, anecdotes and food stories, we hope to:

  • Reconnect with the younger generation so that they are inspired to appreciate their heritage.
  • Introduce the Melaka Chetti flavours to the world, elevating the prominence of this threatened Peranakan community.
The UNESCO Malaysia Chair endorses the book to underpin its importance in preserving the community’s food culture. Proceeds from the sale of the book will be channelled to support academic and caring causes for those who need help in our community.
